Asda Drop Wii U

Supermarket chain Asda have removed Nintendo’s most recent games console from their shelves in light of the poor sales figures that have been published.

“Asda has yanked the Wii U from shop shelves, as new numbers from Nintendo prove that the new system is faring poorly.

The jolly green mega-grocer, which dropped the price of the console to £149 back in May, will still let you buy the Wii U online if you fancy, but it's booted the tablet-oriented console from its brick-and-mortar supermarkets. Asda was keen, however, to stress it hadn't lost faith in Nintendo entirely.

In a statement the supermarket said, "We continue to support Nintendo as a partner and we have recently extended the number of stores and the space we allocate within these stores to...Nintendo's 3DS games and 3DS-XL handheld consoles."

Sales of the Wii U -- which came out in November -- have stalled, with Nintendo confirming today it had sold a meagre 160,000 consoles in the three months between April and June.

Nintendo blamed the sales collapse on a recent lack of in-house-produced games. The Japanese gaming giant did say that its 3DS console had started making more money, however.

In our review, we said the Wii U's touchscreen GamePad held the potential for fun, but that it was questionable whether developers would bother to create games for the complicated controller.

Things will only get tougher for Nintendo's Wii U in the next few months, as Microsoft and Sony get ready to launch their own, brand-new consoles. Unless Nintendo summons forth a drastic price drop, I suspect it'll be the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One winning shoppers' cash this yuletide.”

New Look Turn Back the Clock

High street clothing store New Look are turning back the clock with their new season styles. The company are a big name in the world of clothing and have been a presence on the high street for many years now offering low cost fashion for, predominantly, women and teenagers.

“New Look step back in time and summer sale madness is in full swing, whivh can mean only one thing; the arrival of exciting new styles on the high street.

While the unpredictable weather means buying floaty frocks might not be the best use of hard-earned cash, you can be sure the early transitional garments at fashion retailer New Look will see you through to autumn with ease.

Gone are the billowing silhouettes of summer in favour of a sharper, more confident look that references 1960s, 70s, 80s and 90s influences.

The most eye-catching theme, New Model Army, is a directional take on 60s shapes, with some 80s pop culture thrown in.

Think sharp lines, structured shapes and luxe fabrics on monochrome garments, with colour-popping accents of scarlet and cobalt shades on shift dresses, striking separates, graphic T-shirts and baseball caps.

Ex Groupon CEO Releases Motivational Music Album

Internet based offers website Groupon recently fired their CEO, Andrews Mason. He has had no problems keeping himself busy since February and is releasing a music album featuring motivational work songs.

“The seven-song album, Hardly Workin’, released this week drops business knowledge on listeners with tracks such as The Way to Work, My Door is Always Open and the hip-hop influenced Stretch.
The latter begins ‘we all know that you gotta have goals every quarter’.

Groupon's failure to meet such goals was part of the reason the 32-year-old Mason was fired.

His ouster had been expected for months given investor concerns about the troubled company's declining stock price and financial problems.

Although Groupon pioneered the daily deals business, it spawned many copycats and faced worries that people are tiring of the restaurant, spa and Botox deals that Groupon built its business on.

Mason, a former punk band keyboardist, calls the album ‘motivational business music’. It is available for $9.99 on iTunes and is also streamed on Spotify.

Reviews of the album have been mixed, with one comment on iTunes calling it 'hilarious'.

Another user says: 'Andrew Mason is famous for being a prankster. And I'm pretty sure no self-respecting man would put out this kind of music seriously.'

'I'm debating whether or not this is great or terrible. I find it a little ironic, some of the lyrics. I think I like it but dude...at least become CEO of the record label,' reads another comment.

‘This album pulls some of the most important learnings from my years at the helm of one of the fastest growing businesses in history, and packages them as music,’ Mason wrote on his blog.

‘Executives, mid-level management and front-line employees are all sure to find valuable takeaways.’

Here's the opening line: ‘If you're seeking business wisdom, you don't need no MBA, look no further than the beauty that surrounds us every day.’

And it goes on from there. As of Wednesday afternoon, there were no music videos available on YouTube.

Mason, who studied music at Northwestern University, is married to folk singer, Jenny Gillespie. He founded Groupon Inc in 2008.

To diversify its business, Groupon has expanded into product sales, payments services, restaurant reservations and other areas.

The Chicago-based company's stock price has nearly doubled since Mason's firing.”

Are Charity Shops Thriving During the UK’s Financial Struggles?



At a time when the UK public are still pinching their purses in order to keep up with the ever growing cost of living compared with the amount that they’re earning, there is evidence to suggest that more and more people are choosing to shop in charity shops or equivalent establishments that trade second hand clothes.

Charity shops have always been a presence on the high street but in terms of the clothes departments within them, they have been less popular with people assuming that they are of a lower quality. This stigma has been changed with the growth of internet sensations such as ASOS Marketplace, Ebay and Preloved where, as perverse as it sounds, the customer feels less like they’re purchasing an item previously worn. These websites also offer the possibility of landing a deal – they often offer items that are of an extremely high quality at discounted prices because they are not new. It also means that the second customer in the chain can, in theory, get a lot of wear out of the product because its high quality dictates that the item will be able to take a lot of wear before it is scruffy and old.

As the name suggests, purchasing from a charity shop also means that you are able to donate to a good cause – say Oxfam – while also acquiring a new possession. Particularly living in the developed Western world, there is an expectation to provide some help for those lesser developed countries but when personal finances are in sorry states themselves, it can become more difficult to allow for some of your income to be spent on others. As selfish as that sounds, charity has to be a bonus option. By including a purchase in the donation (or donation in the purchase dependent on personal perspective) the customer can still maintain their moral dignity while looking after themselves.

Financial struggles will always cause customers to look for better options when making purchases. This can be anything from food to clothing to entertainment, being able to get something you need or want for a lower cost is the ultimate goal so companies such as ASOS offering a second hand clothes service means they don’t lose their customers’ business entirely.

The History of John Lewis

The story began in 1864 when John Lewis opened a small drapers shop in Oxford Street and took 16s 4d on his first day. 21 years later his son and the founder of the John Lewis Partnership, John Spedan Lewis was born. In 1905 John Lewis bought control of Peter Jones, the control of which was to be handed to his son in 1914. With this control John Spedan Lewis established Staff Committees, the predecessors to Committees for Communication as they’re known these days.

1918 saw the first publication of The Gazette by John Spedan Lewis. He also established a staff council – today’s Partnership, Divisional and Local forums – in 1919. 1928 brought the death of John Lewis and his son gain control of both the John Lewis store and Peter Jones. John Spedan Lewis had the First Constitution published and converted the brand to a public company: John Lewis and Company Limited. One year later in 1929, the First Trust Settlement was created which legalised the John Lewis Partnership. As of this point, all profits were divisible between the partners.

Following this, the store was to take many steps towards becoming the major establishment that we know today. In 1937 The Partnership bought a chain of 10 shops: Waitrose. In 1940 The Partnership doubled through the purchase of Selfridges Provinvial Stores Group, one of which was Cole Brothers, now John Lewis Sheffield.

In 1950 the second Trust Settlement was created and John Spedan Lewis transferred all of his remaining shares and therefore ultimate control of the company to the trustees. Just five years later John Spedan Lewis retired as Chairman and Bernard Miller stepped into the role. It also saw the first Waitrose supermarket open in Streatham. John Spedan Lewis died in 1963.

1972 saw the return of the company to the bloodline when Peter Lewis, John Spedan Lewis’ nephew succeeded Bernard Miller as Chairman. He remained in the role until 1993 when Stuart Hampson took over.

The 21st Century brought all the modern attributes that we are used to now and in 2001 johnlewis.com was launched allowing the public to shop from the comfort of their own homes. In 2006 Greenbee, a direct services company was launched. 2007 saw the retirement of Stuart Hampson as Chairman and his successor Charlie Mayfield adopt the role. In 2009 the first John Lewis at Home store was opened in Poole (Dorset) and the Partnership Services was launched to meet Partner needs. In 2011 The Partnership headed south and opened Waitrose stores in Jersey and Guernsey.

Now, in 2013, The Partnership are one of the UK’s top ten retailers. They have 39 John Lewis stores – 30 department stores and nine At Home stores – 291 Waitrose stores, an online and catalogue business, a direct services company (Greenbee), one production unit and a farm.
